And Still We Rise: Student Accounts of Protective Factors During the Great Migration

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 112B

Abstract

California was founded as an intentionally segregated state and schools were often sites of interracial conflict (Hudson, 2020). This paper uses qualitative and historical research to analyze the anti-Black strategies that were used to miseducate African American students, the experiences and efforts of African American students and their families to access spaces of educational opportunity, and the protective factors that enabled their survival during the Great Migration.
