Using mixed methods, we examine differences between underrepresented students in a CURE and underrepresented students in a traditional lab in predicting interest in conducting research as a career, particularly focusing on changes in sense of belonging and confidence as predictors. We found that changes in sense of belonging and confidence significantly interacted with Black and Hispanic students to predict interest in research as a career. On the other hand, changes in sense of belonging and confidence did not significantly predict interest in research as a career for any group of underrepresented students in the traditional lab. The reasons offered for changes in confidence and belonging differed between traditional lab and CURE students, highlighting the salient aspects of CUREs.
