Faculty Motivation for Teaching and Research: Examining Impacts of Marital and Family Status, Social Support

Sat, April 13, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study examines the impact of gender and family status roles on faculty motivation. To address the study questions, data was collected in 2023, following institutional review board approval, via an electronic questionnaire. Quantitative results (N=210) indicated faculty who are married, male, and have dependents most motivated. Multiple regression models predicting motivation showed teaching amotivation is moderated by being married, and intrinsic motivation for teaching is moderated by having no dependents. With the changing landscape of workforce across industries, university administrators and other leaders should pay attention to how the personal circumstances of their faculty interact with their job responsibilities and be prepared to adjust policy and practice in the interest of people and productivity.
