Abstract

Career decisions are critical components of various cultures and societies. Careers not only provide financial compensation but can determine social status, relationships, and sense of identity. In the United States, children are introduced to careers in early childhood and are encouraged to envision themselves as a future occupation. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of parental views on student STEM aspirations. We surveyed 124 early adolescent public school students regarding their aspirations in science, views of scientists, and perception of their parent’s attitude toward science. Results indicate that parental views of science strongly influence their child’s STEM aspirations and images of scientists.
