The Essence of Connection: An Exploration of Black Men's Influence on Black Boys Through Social-Emotional Learning

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study examined the unique experiences of African American male educators and students' influence on connectivity through Social-Emotional Learning. A group of African American male educators narrate their stories on the benefits of connection. The connection between a Black male educator and student potentially develops mentorships and the recruitment of future Black educators. Currently, African American males represent only 2% of the teaching field in America (U.S. Department of Education, 2015), therefore, Black male educators are vital to this study. Social Emotional Learning emphasizes the importance of relationship skills. The participants used connection to increase positive relationships, academic success, and exposure to improve success for black boys.
