Assessing the Problematic Mobile Phone Use Questionnaire (PMPUQ) and Its Adaptations Using an American Sample

Abstract

Problematic mobile phone use can be defined as negative impacts due to one's inability to regulate the use of mobile phone. The Problematic Mobile Phone Use Questionnaire (PMPUQ) is one of the earliest scales measuring problematic mobile phone use. However, as PMPUQ was developed 15 years ago, previous literature has reported multiple short and adapted versions of the PMPUQ, calling for a systematic examination of their psychometric properties. We compared four versions to identify the best, using an American sample (N=1,195). The 3-factor 11-item version outperformed the others in representing the PMPUQ, with reasonable reliability and validity. The study advanced current literature on problematic mobile phone use by identifying an optimal version to assess this construct via a robust method.
