This article explores the intersections of race and gender using an arts-based method called response art. Response art allows researchers to make sense of an intense interaction they experienced through drawing and painting. The following inquiry is the product of an intense interaction that I struggled to make sense of in a juvenile justice facility. Using intersectionality as a lens, I consider the ways in which race and gender influence my identity as a researcher working with Black girls in the juvenile justice system through a series of response art pieces. Through this analysis, I peel back the layers of these raw moments and examine questions that surround my identity, privilege, and social justice work.
