Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: Mentoring Indigenous Leaders in Education

Sat, April 13, 9:35 to 11:05am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 402

Abstract

The theme of the 2024 AERA’s annual meeting focuses on the “unapologetic centering of race, racial injustice, and other forms of oppression in the work of educational researchers while building spaces of emancipation, justice, and dignity.” Indeed, one thing that can be agreed on is that, for Indigenous peoples, there are many iterations of racial injustice and oppression in our own lands. Because of the multifaceted nature of our oppression, the mentoring of Indigenous leaders in education with the skills and abilities to dismantle racial injustice and construct educational possibilities is both a complex and artful undertaking. This study documents the mentoring approaches of Indigenous mentors—two Māori and two Hawaiian—working in the field of Indigenous education.
