As we continue to face multiple global issues, it is imperative that we construct new educational possibilities by helping our students apply knowledge to create positive value. As a faculty who teach in a fully online asynchronous Master’s and PhD program focused on the value-creating approaches to education expounded by three Japanese educators, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda, and Daisaku Ikeda, I conducted a self-study to examine how I could be more intentional in helping my students create value. Using Makiguchi’s (1988-1996) theory of value as the framework, I identified and developed teaching practices that were “value-creative,” such as assessments that are enjoyable (value of beauty), lead to personal growth (value of gain), and benefit those around them (value of good).
