Transitions: Under- to Post-Graduate Education in the United States and the United Kingdom

Sat, April 13, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

“Transitions,” is a 3-part short film and research paper, which highlights the experiences of U.S. and U.K. BIPOC individuals transitioning between under- and post-graduate education. The study combines counter-storytelling and community based participatory research to tell the narratives of 20 students, faculty, and staff who were recruited via snowball sampling and spanned 6 institutions. Results indicated that Americans felt as though their universities promised diversity and failed to follow through on it, creating a sense of disappointment, while British individuals felt disconnected from their universities due to the institution’s lack of acknowledgment of racial difference. The study is singular in its transatlantic approach and presents unique insights on the state of DEI efforts following the 2020 #BlackLivesMatter movement.
