“It’s Complicated”: A Critical Duoethnography of Foreign-Born Teacher Educators of Color

Sun, April 14, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

In this qualitative study, we, three foreign-born teacher educators of color, employ a critical duoethnography to investigate how we navigate teaching critical pedagogy in the white-dominant context of US higher education. Drawing upon Figured Worlds and Critical Race Theory as our theoretical framework, we delve into our intersecting identities and examine how they shape the construction and negotiation of our teaching identities. Our findings reveal our intersectional identities as foreign-born educators of color, mothers, and graduate students have a bidirectional interaction with our teacher practices. Engaging in a critical duoethnography allowed us to unpack these complexities, identify structural issues, create a support group, and hope for a more equitable future.
