Examining Undergraduate Research Experiences of Latinx STEM Students in Research-Intensive HSIs and Emerging HSIs
Thu, April 11, 10:50am to 12:20pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall BAbstract
Prior research shows that Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are key in Latinx STEM pathways (Herrera, 2020; Herrera & Hurtado, 2014). Also, research experiences are a high-impact practice that introduces students to research (Kuh, 2008). This study examines the social and cultural assets that Latinx use to engage in undergraduate research programs on two campuses, an emerging HSI and HSI. Through social network analysis, emerging findings reveal gendered differences, the importance of Latinx peers in securing research mentors and participation in research programs.
