The Teacher Perceptions, Implementation, and Challenge With Social Emotional Learning in Florida

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Current studies of SEL programs involving students around the world confirm consistently show that integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) development into the structures and practices of schools is a path to creating safe, supportive environments to foster positive cognitive, emotional, and behavioral skills. There is limited evidence on steps teacher preparation programs and districts have taken to empower teachers with skillsets to implement culturally responsive SEL that promotes equity in schools. Based on our previous instrument design and data collection, researchers analyzed the PK-12 teachers’ perceptions, knowledge, training, and experiences in fostering student’SEL. Results indicate that educators recognize the importance of integrating SEL into their classrooms and schools, yet require more time, resources, and training to do so effectively.
