The Hierarchical Structure of L2 (Second Language)-Learner Grit: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract

L2 grit has attracted much attention from language acquisition researchers since it is an important contributing factor in students’ achieving language learning goals. The current meta- analysis reviewed and synthesized L2-learner grit literature focusing on whether it is a hierarchical construct. Results were reached from 29 studies representing data from 31 unique samples and 12,944 participants: a) there was a large level of correlation between PE and CI (ρ = .51) and b) the overall L2-learner grit did exhibit more predictive power than each facet alone. In conclusion, L2-learner grit could be regarded as a hierarchical construct. Further investigations on validating the structure of L2-learner grit are recommended.
