Mathematical Literacy in Textbook Examples: A Comparative Analysis Based on China and PISA Frameworks

Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Mathematical literacy has been highly valued internationally. This study uses the Content analysis method to code and analyze the types and levels of examples in mathematics textbooks published by PEP in accordance with the Chinese mathematics discipline core literacy framework and PISA mathematics literacy framework. They are basically similar in terms of literacy types, but there are significant differences in literacy levels. Subsequently, the Multiple Streams theory was used to analyze the reasons for the similarities and differences. The "problem stream" and "policy stream" explained why the literacy types are similar, while the "political flow" explained why they are different in literacy levels. This study aims to emphasize the value of reconstructing local frameworks in the process of policy borrowing.
