Cultural awareness is an essential 21st-century skill that fosters empathy and respect. However, some teachers believe that direct teaching of culture is sufficient, which neglects authentic learning for multicultural students. An action research study was conducted where Grade One multicultural students visited a Heritage Museum. Teachers thought the students were not interested in the dragon concept in Chinese culture because it was too difficult to understand, but the students were actually very intrigued. Afterwards, using picture book reading and drama, the students became highly motivated in their learning. Through action research cycles, it was found that appropriate pedagogical activities can open up educational possibilities which engage students, enhance literacy, promote intercultural dialog, and make connections with current themes that matter.
