Exploring Students’ Receptivity to Feedback: A Latent Profile Analysis

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 405

Abstract

Feedback can play a pivotal role in learning but is only effective when students engage with it. Key to this issue is understanding the process of how students receive feedback. We performed latent profile analysis on students’ receptivity to instructional feedback (RIF) on a dataset of 1800 German secondary school students. We characterized RIF profiles, predicted profile membership using established factors (cognitive ability, personality traits, prior achievement, age, and gender) that relate to feedback reception, and examined how profile membership influenced writing performance. We identified three profiles distinguished by receptivity dimensions: intransigents, empty promisers, and enthusiasts. The least successful group was associated with less cognitive ability, less extraversion, and higher neuroticism. Implications of a holistic approach to RIF are discussed.
