Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study delves into the burgeoning trend of YouTube channels focused on language learning with generative AI tools like ChatGPT, which gained popularity since late 2022. The research investigates the perspectives and implementations of content creators in this domain, who now play a significant role in language teaching and learning. Employing a mixed-methods netnographic approach, the study combines qualitative and quantitative techniques to analyze 140 identified videos. Four main categories of creators emerge: educators, learners, technology professionals, and e-learning providers, with educators, especially English and Japanese teachers, being the most prevalent. The study sheds light on the advantages, drawbacks, and concerns surrounding the integration of AI tools in language learning, contributing to the understanding of their impact in language education.
