Emergent Digital Literacy in Chinese Preschoolers: Developmental Patterns and Associated Predicators

Abstract

This study explored how digital literacy emerged and what factors affected its development in the early years. Altogether 2272 parents of young children were recruited from central China and completed this online survey. The result indicated that: (1) there was a significant age difference in early digital literacy, with TV literacy being the first, followed by touchscreen literacy, AI literacy, and PC literacy; (2) young children who used digitals alone or co-used with siblings had better digital literacy, whereas those co-used with grandparents performed worse than others; (3) age of the child, family structure, home income, home digital resources, and digital co-use significantly contributed to the prediction of young children’s emergent digital literacy.
