The advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, has demonstrated potential for L2 academic writing. The present study used a qualitative approach to examine the use of ChatGPT in academic writing and students’ perception changes after using it. The results showed students’ use of ChatGPT in three phases, and their changes of perceptions in academic writing and AI use could be witnessed, and these changes are shaped by their perceived improvements in writing (e.g., increased confidence and motivation). Students appreciated ChatGPT’s availability of immediate feedback and individualized assistance in L2 academic writing. However, they also acknowledged certain concerns (e.g., plagiarismm, potential overreliance on ChatGPT in developing independent writing skills.)
