This exploratory analysis examines the integration of ChatGPT in language learning and its role in self-directed learning (SDL), building upon Song and Hill's (2007) model. Through interviews with 19 YouTubers and thematic analysis of relevant video content, distinct constructs beyond Song and Hill's model are identified. A refined SDL framework is proposed, which emphasizes two key aspects: (1) the interactive relationships between learners' traits and ongoing learning processes (local), and (2) the evolving nature of SDL in the rapidly advancing landscape of generative AI, with socio-political-cultural foundations of AI shaping the learning environment (global). The study highlights ChatGPT's potential as an effective tool for promoting self-directed language learning in today's technologically driven educational landscape.
