Sustainable communities require environments that promote human flourishing. The idea of sustainable communities, built on indigenous lands and waterways, requires a broader analysis of the impact of education on Māori as ‘tangata whenua’; and calls for the crisis of Māori education to be addressed.
Drawing on our experiences in the provision of Māori language immersion ITE programmes we discuss the application of a kura kaupapa Māori philosophy to our pedagogical practices and cultural processes that connect the environment to te ao Māori through such course offerings as Waka Ama (Using Outrigger canoe as a discipline for promoting health and wellbeing through theory and praxis ) and Ngā Tikanga o Te Marae (tribal protocols, customs and values).
