Student Perspectives on Online Assessment in Higher Education

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Franklin 12

Abstract

This study reports students’ experiences, attitudes, and expectations regarding online assessment. A sample of N = 254 students at a German university, who had all previously participated in seven online assessments on average, responded to a survey covering several aspects of online assessment design. The results indicate that students had positive experiences with online assessments in general. In addition, the majority of students indicated that they were open to participating in online assessments in the future. However, the findings show that students are reluctant about assessment designs that differ from their traditional experience. Peer assessment, in particular, was rejected by the students. At the same time, the students would like to receive more profound feedback in future online assessments.
