Self-Reflection Through Visual Art: Social Emotional Learning Strategy and Application

Fri, April 12, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted all our learning communities. We have been experiencing social and emotional depression, anxiety, isolation, and trauma. To respond to those challenges, art educators and board-certified registered art therapists with decades of experience working in the globe have collaborated for over two years. This presentation explores possibilities of social emotional learning practices in art education driven from art therapy approaches. Utilizing visual art as a key medium of therapeutic approaches, the examples showcase possible applications for art educators to implement diverse practices in their classroom settings. Beyond traditional art education curricula, art therapy-influenced pedagogical practices will effectively enhance educators’ readiness of dealing with students’ mental conditions and thus, increase students’ positive learning, self-esteem, and emotional well-being.
