Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Background. The influence of socioeconomic status on student’s mental health is a well-established determinant but has rarely been explored in relation to fear of failure.
Aims. The present study investigated the mediating role of fear of failure between SES and student’s wellbeing outcomes and whether SES moderates the relationship between fear of failure and wellbeing outcomes.
Methods. Data were analyzed using moderated mediation analyses, using 12,058 students from four provinces in China.
Results. Fear of failure was identified as a mediator for SES on mental wellbeing outcomes. SES significantly buffered the negative effect of fear of failure on positive affect and sense of belonging, but not significantly on the relationship between fear of failure and meaning in life.
