Switch Mode: Embedding Text-Based Programming in Block-Based Environments

Sun, April 14, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Franklin 2

Abstract

This paper introduces Switch mode, a hybrid programming approach designed to support learners in transitioning from block- to text-based programming. Switch mode blocks allow text-based commands inside of conventional blocks. They can be added by: (1) directly drag-and-dropping a Switch mode block; (2) right clicking the block and converting it into a Switch mode block. Switch mode offers flexible entry points, aligning with learners' proficiency, and encouraging their progress towards text-based programs. Its unique capability to support various programming strategies and bridge the gap, presents an innovative contribution to the expanding landscape of tools aimed at guiding beginners towards mastering text-based programming. The paper also presents the preliminary findings from a pilot classroom study with learners using Switch mode.
