This study explores the validity and reliability of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) using the Rasch analysis. We used the CCSSE survey collected from 2017 to 2019 and analyzed the validity and reliability of each of the five benchmarks proposed by Marti (2008). Our results show that students’ responses for the first benchmark show a good fit for the Rasch model and meet the unidimensionality and local independence assumption. Several items function differently based on students’ race and ethnicity, however. We also find that more items should be included to differentiate between students who are more engaged in active and collaborative learning and those who are less engaged.
