Civic writing in schools enhances students’ understanding of social problems and engagement in public conversations about these. This study examined the results of the civic writing project “Letter to the Next President of the Philippines” where grades 9-10 students wrote letters to their next president about social problems they hoped to be resolved. A total of 322 students from public and private schools in urban and rural areas across the country participated in the study. The writing activity was conducted in March-May 2022 before the Philippine presidential election. Findings show that the topics cited in the letters, e.g., poverty, education, corruption, unemployment, and environment, were tied to the students’ socio-cultural contexts. Implications of enhancing civic engagement through civic writing were discussed.
