Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 303

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education (EI/ECSE) professionals on Home Language Practices (HLP) of Korean-American mothers of children with disabilities or at-risk. The analysis of narratives from an online community reveals these mothers' decision-making processes regarding bilingual development and HLP. Factors such as children's characteristics, professionals' advice, and mothers' understanding of disabilities significantly influence HLP decisions. The study underscores the importance of family-professional relationships, community understanding, and online resources in shaping these decisions. The findings advocate for professionals' active participation in online communities and sharing research-backed information to support families, emphasizing the principles of family-centered services.
