This systematic literature review examined empirical reports of the actions teachers take as they form caring relationships with students of color. The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) database was systematically searched. This search, in conjunction with ancestral and progeny citation searching and hand-searching of sixteen journals, yielded a data corpus of 129 studies included for detailed analysis. Inductive, qualitative analysis showed that teachers care for students of color in three main ways: through interpersonal interactions, academic interactions, and the development of critical consciousness around systemic racism. Student-participants in most studies were Black or Latine. Thus, further study of how to form caring relationships with Native American, Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern students is warranted.
