Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The content of textbooks may influence the level of competence that students develop. Students more frequently use the strategies that are more emphasized in textbooks, less proficient for topics that are not included in textbooks which are not usually taught and learned in class. In this study, we investigated the impact of implicative instruction of strategy use on the mastery of different types of strategies while learning two-digit addition, with 80 Chinese first-graders learning through textbooks with different instructional approaches. Furthermore, our study explored the impact of textbooks on students’ performance in addition, with a specific focus on how they can facilitate the development and utilization of adaptive strategies.
