Professional Development Practices to Support Developing Racial Literacy in White In-Service Teachers

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Racial literacy is the ability to confront and address race and racial hierarchies in today's classrooms, which is imperative as the makeup of K-12 classrooms continues to diversify. Research has indicated that most K-12 teachers are White, and lamentably, do not have the racial literacy required to support students of color as it relates to teaching and learning. The purpose of this study is to explore the racial literacy of White teachers and develop recommendations for professional development to build their capacity to discuss and integrate constructs of race and racism into their pedagogical practices.
