Double-Marginalized Talent: Ballet Education in South Korea

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Ballet has been a relatively marginalized talent development area in education research compared to other academic subjects. Moreover, ballet education in South Korea is rarely investigated as the non-traditional culture in ballet, even though Korean ballet dancers are internationally highly appreciated. This study aims to introduce the phenomenon of ballet education in Korean culture as a double-marginalized talent area. The results showed that the proximity of ballet institutions helped discover the participants’ talent early. Most of the participants attended art-specialized schools to major in ballet. Participants had experienced mental stress connected to physical stress due to the intensive training. The findings provide empirical evidence and information about ballet education in Korean culture.
