Fostering Inclusive Attitudes: A Longitudinal Study of Preservice Teachers in a Dual-Certified Program

Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study investigates pre-service teachers' attitudes toward inclusive education in a dual-certified teacher education program focused on inclusive pedagogy and practices. The purpose is to examine how attitudes evolve during the preparation program and identify impactful courses or experiences. Grounded in conceptualizing inclusive education as a social justice imperative, this mixed-methods longitudinal panel study employs the Multidimensional Attitudes toward Inclusive Education Scale to assess candidates’ attitudes over three years. Results show significant changes in inclusive attitudes, particularly during full-time student teaching. Findings offer insights into program design and faculty roles in fostering inclusive values and pedagogies among future educators. Future research should explore broader impacts of inclusive education programs on teachers' attitudes and practices in the field.
