Global higher education has increasingly adopted online teaching and learning in the post-COVID context. However, much of the research on motivation and engagement in higher education focuses on face-to-face contexts. To address this gap, we employed a latent profile analysis to identify online motivation and engagement profiles among 27,406 university students. Four profiles were found: unmotivated and disengaged, moderately motivated and engaged, ambivalently motivated and engaged, highly motivated and engaged. Key aspects of the teaching and learning environment such as having clear goals, emphasizing interdependence, good teaching, and appropriate assessment were critical predictors of students’ online motivation and engagement profiles. These findings underscore the importance of the teaching and learning environment in understanding online learning motivation and engagement.
