This Institutional Review Board approved study aims to examine the effects of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) enrichment program on Black students in grades three to seven. The program is designed to serve as a counterspace outside the confines of public school milieu, offering a supportive and inclusive learning environment that acknowledges and leverages the cultural capital of these students. By providing an alternative setting beyond conventional school hours, STEAM enrichment programs have the potential to (re)imagineĀ mathematics education and foster culturally relevant engagement. This entails the integration of culturally appropriate illustrations and approaches to problem-solving. This is the culmination of a two-year mixed-methods study using a purposive sample of participants from a Saturday STEAM enrichment program.
