Some researchers have proposed that video games such as Minecraft can be used to promote student creativity. Yet, little is known regarding how engaging educational games should be designed to foster student creativity. Hence, this study aims to develop an educational game by modifying Minecraft and then examine the impact of two game design elements- challenge and autonomy on middle school students’ in-game creative performance. A one-week creativity support game intervention was conducted with 88 sixth graders. Findings indicated that games that feature challenge and autonomy could have a positive impact on students’ in-game creative performance through two mediation factors (i.e., creative efficacy and engagement).
