Informal STEM Learning: Understanding Latine Families' and Practitioners' Perspectives

Thu, April 11, 12:40 to 2:10pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study explores the perception and understanding of STEM concepts by early learning practitioners and Latine parents, focusing on three key areas: computational thinking, the world of work, and everyday literacy. Despite the critical role that parents and caregivers play in shaping children's learning capabilities, there needs to be more focus on engaging Latine parents in early STEM learning. This research seeks to bridge this gap through partnerships with three community-based organizations serving Latine families. Our preliminary findings suggest a need for greater clarity and accessibility in the language used to communicate these STEM topics. Specifically, early learning educators expressed uncertainty about how to promote these STEM concepts, while Latine parents found traditional educational jargon unfamiliar and inaccessible.
