Exploring the Potential of Collaborative Online International Learning to Enhance Preservice Teachers' Mathematical Feedback Practices

Thu, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study explores the potential of collaborative online international learning (COIL) experiences to enhance preservice teachers' ability to provide noticing-based feedback to enhance students' meaningful mathematical learning. In this study, small groups of preservice teachers from universities in the United States and Spain worked together in a collaborative manner to complete a four-phase activity. It was found that the COIL experience helped PSTs to develop their noticing skills, which enabled them to identify students' strengths and weaknesses and provide feedback that was tailored to the students’ needs. The study suggests that COIL experiences can be a valuable tool for improving teacher education programs and enhancing student learning outcomes.
