The Relational and Academic Costs of Racialized Turnover and Shortages on Students

Sun, April 14, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 112B

Abstract

This study explores the impact of turnover and teacher shortages on students’ experiences in schools. Turnover has long been shown to disproportionately impact schools serving historically marginalized students, for reasons tied to structural racism. In this paper, we illustrate the damage that turnover inflicts on relational trust between teachers and students, and the harm that shortages in particular create for student’s academic experiences.
