Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 104BAbstract
This study explores the role of creative assessment in university students’ understanding of diversity and their responses to this innovative approach. The study took place in an undergraduate children’s literature course, where students had the option to create their own picturebooks as their final assignment. Through qualitative content analysis of 8 students’ picturebook creations and reflections, creative assessment was found to deepen comprehension of diversity compared to traditional assignments. Moreover, students expressed a profound sense of ownership and connection to their work, underlining the significance of creative assessments in meaningful learning experiences. Implications suggest integrating creative assessment strategies for teacher educators to cultivate a more inclusive and transformative learning environment that centers around diversity issues.
