Land-Based Education for Interculturality and Social Justice in Teacher Education in Chile

Thu, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 308

Abstract

Internationally, the interest in connecting educational institutions with their territories has grown substantially. This challenge is also in line with global concerns of indigenous peoples, for whom, despite the diversity of experiences, community is central. In Chile, this concern has been barely addressed, therefore, this project seeks to improve a teacher education program in interculturality. Specifically, the main objective is to strengthen an intercultural education approach through the articulation of courses with the community and land-based perspectives. Indigenous Standpoint conceptualizations framed this study, and, the notion of community-based education helped us to understand the possibilities for collaboration with Mapuche organizations. This project invites us to continue discussing the forms and possibilities of articulation between teacher education programs and Indigenous communities.
