Effective Practices for Cultivating Belonging for First-Generation Students of Color at PWIs: A Scoping Review

Abstract

This scoping review synthesizes the research on first-generation college students (FGCS) of color as it relates to their sense of belonging at predominately white institutions (PWIs). Using Strayhorn’s sense of belonging framework and the PRISMA scoping review model, two researchers critically analyzed the extant literature produced since the year 2000 for common themes related to guiding frameworks, barriers faced by FGCS of color at PWIs, the assets this population can leverage throughout college, and effective institutional practices for cultivating a sense of belonging. Implications for practice and recommendations for future research are included.
