This study explores the perceptions and impact of sociograms - a graphical representation of social links among individuals - in online learning environments, specifically within the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. Surveying 106 online learners using a mixed-method approach, we found a broad spectrum of opinions, from unfamiliarity to appreciation for promoting cognitive engagement. Furthermore, sociograms were recognized as effective tools for visualizing social interactions and understanding group dynamics. They offer potential benefits for online learning design, although explicit instruction may be needed to maximize their impact. The findings emphasize the benefits of integrating sociograms into online learning design and suggest the need for explicit instruction of sociograms to maximize their efficacy.
