Supporting University Faculty in Teaching International Students: Findings From a Faculty Learning Community

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This Participatory Action Research study explored a year-long Faculty Learning Community (FLC) on promoting culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and the journey of Dr. Milton, an engineering professor who desired increased engagement with his international students. Dr. Milton was ultimately unable to change his teaching practice during the FLC, and findings show that the focus on teachers and students–as opposed to teaching and learning–seemed to serve as a barrier for pedagogical change. We offer recommendations for future FLCs to better support similarly willing faculty in their efforts to enact pedagogical change.
