While Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) have implemented the “we grow our own faculty” approach to enhance Latinx faculty representation on campus, previous research on academic inbreeding has largely overlooked the U.S. higher education system. By gathering data from 2,722 faculty members across six Hispanic-serving research institutions in Texas through their websites, we investigate the current state of academic inbreeding as a faculty recruitment strategy at HSIs. We present descriptive statistics on academic homegrowing/inbreeding based on faculty members’ gender, race, tenure status, and disciplinary affiliation and offer implications for faculty recruitment and hiring.
