Student Affairs Professionals’ Attrition: Exploring Retention Predictors

Thu, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Student affairs professionals play vital roles across U.S. colleges and universities. Student outcomes including retention, academic performance, and graduation rates are all impacted by programs operated by student affairs professionals. Despite the importance of student affairs programs, the literature indicates professionals feel underpaid, overworked, and underappreciated. Student affairs professionals leave the field at an attrition rate of 50% within five years. This study explores retention predictors using Job Embeddedness Theory as a framework and Structural Equation Modeling as an analysis. Student affairs professionals’ retention has important implications for not only students but organizational operation as well.
