Abstract

Open-access educational resources offer increased access to high quality educational content. However, little is known how to optimize educational videos for medical specialty learning, such as orthopedic surgery. This study aims to evaluate 1) the pedagogical and technological features of online educational materials in a video-based orthopedic learning portal and, 2) the link between learner engagement and the design features. The analysis of user interactivity data (N = 141) and the multimedia features of educational videos showed that users engaged highly with videos that demonstrate core surgical procedures and common clinical cases. User engagement was correlated with multimedia features of segmenting, signaling, and personalization. Identifying key multimedia features has important implications for practitioners in designing medical educational videos.
