This study explored the use of conversational AI as a method for collecting data on active learning in postsecondary introductory statistics courses. The study employed TeachFX, an AI-powered smartphone app, to collect data on the instructional practices of six instructors over the course of a term. The AI-generated data are compared with data from classroom observations to understand the viability and limitations of conversational AI for collecting data at scale. Although significantly more data were collected with TeachFX, some discrepancies were found between the two datasets, indicating the importance of understanding the nuances of AI-based data collection. Despite these challenges, conversational AI offers promise for large-scale data collection, paving the way for improved insights into instructional practices in postsecondary contexts.
