Riddles as Culturally Sustaining Literacy Practice in Early Childhood Education for Latinx Young Children

Thu, April 11, 9:00 to 10:30am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Recent studies have highlighted the advantages of co-creating culturally sustaining literacy strategies with young children (Byrnes‐Cloet & Hill, 2022; Harris et al., 2022; Watanabe Kganetso, 2017), but the implementation of riddles as a strategy to sustain the cultural backgrounds of culturally diverse children is lacking in the literature. In a time when the presence of young Latinx children in early childhood settings is increasing, two early childhood educators explored riddles as a culturally sustaining literacy practice. Teaching Latinx young children, these two teachers identified the elements and contents to integrate into the creation of riddles as a culturally sustaining practice for Latinx young children at an Early Head Start Center in South Texas.
